I screwed up and chose 1and1 hosting now after my sites being down on and off for about a week now I want to move them. I want to move before i put any more sites on this hosting package. I have heard horror stories about moving sites off of 1and1, however i want to do this now before i get in any deeper. Has anyone used Namecheap's hosting? I am just using shared hosting right now i don't think i need better hosting at the current moment i only have a few sites with some low traffic at the moment so i think shared hosting will be fine. Has anyone ever had to move a site off of 1and1? Was it as bad as everyone says their hosting is? Any and all help is very much appreciated!!!

If your domain registrar and your web host are different companies then moving the site should be pretty simple.

Copy the files to your new host, change the DNS with your registrar. Done.

how about the database? i have setup new mysql databases but never moved one. And also unfortunately i registered my domain with them, i know dumb me! i should have just done it with namecheap but i didn't have any problem with 1and1 at the time so i just went and registered it with them. I don't mind paying a transfer fee as long as it is not too expensive i only need to transfer one domain. what do you think

Save the database and set it up on a different host. Its pretty simple :)
Sorry to hear that you have such a bad experience.. hope your next host is better.

You could transfer the domain out of 1and1 as well. Although an added expense you wouldn't have to worry about them doing anything to you after you leave.

The real rule of thumb here though is usually to not register your domain with a web host. There are good ones out there but a lot of them hold domains hostage. So you're best to buy your domain from somewhere like say namecheap then your hosting from somewhere else. That way you can switch hosts without issues in the future if you ever need to and all your domain registrar does for you is register your domain.

brilliant i am thinking the same thing. I love Namecheap as a registrar! however i noticed that they are starting to offer hosting. here is my dillema. I currently have hosting with bluehost as well as 1and1 and have been very pleased so far. However i like namecheap as a registrar so do i give them a shot at hosting?

As suggested, it is usually better to leave domains to registrars, and hosting to hosts. Being a good registrar does not mean they will offer good hosting. When a company tries to specialize in both, one usually suffers. Many DP members use hostgator for shared hosting - although there are certainly others.

Namecheap is great for domain names, but not for hosting. I have PM'ed you.

    Thanks

If you are still looking for a dedicated provider, it would be wise to check out softlayer.com .. We have a many machines with them that we manage, and we could not be happier.

I hope one day i can generate enough traffic and revenue to have a need for a dedicated server but unfortunately for now the revenue i am receiving now only makes sense for me to use shared hosting. thanks for hte offer though

Anywhere other than 1and1 or your registrar.

Make the move first, then close down your account.

You want to give them no hint that you are doing this until after the fact.

Do a database backup and restore via phpMyAdmin or Cpanel

Ive used 1and1 for years now. They are cheap ($5 a month for 1.2TB of monthly transfer? zoinks!), but lousy.

You experience an outage. Email customer service. 24 hours later, you get an email saying your site is up. Right, it was only down for 30 minutes, thanks.

    But check this out...

Their ENTIRE American site is down. I go to 1and1.com, its down. admin.1and1.com, down.

My email (pop.1and1.com and smtp.1and1.com), down.

    Webmail? Down!

The uk site is up and running.

I called tech support. I got "doodoodoo" all circuits are busy and a hangup. Something bad is going down. I hope not too bad.

I have been with 1and1 for 12 months now and I have a dedicated managed server. I have had no problems at all for 12 months, but recently it has been pulling up 404 errors. Each time I have had to call their freephone number.

Last time it was fixed in 20 mins, just called them again now as my site is pulling 404 messages and it will be an hour before it is back up

If the problem is not resolved I'll be moving servers, there is nothing worse than a site being down !
