Yup, that what usually happens after you format, and re-install. Especially Windows. Of course, the retail version of XP or Vista > manufacture XP or Vista.

I think if you use CCleaner registry cleaner and good antivirus for your system then you will work smoothly and faster on your system. There is no need to reinstall OS if its not needed badly.

Last week, my office computer was reformatted. All of a sudden, the PC became very active and quick to respond to the commands and all the viruses disappeared into the oblivion :D

I did, and reloaded them already...

I heard from some of of our customers in Verizon DSL that reformatting in USA would cost around $200... is this true? This is very expensive and a real pain for people who don't know how to do it...

I am working as Tier 3 technical Support for Verizon High Speed Internet and I am trying to do my best to help customers because I feel pity for them... Calling Microsoft, dell, hp would cost a lot if their machine is out of warranty.

    $200 = 9,000 Philippine pesos

Reformatting here if you are going to pay for a technician would cost only 700 pesos (less than $20)... :D

So sad if you are living in USA and you know nothing about PC...

If I am to be given a chance to open an online business, I would probably open an online support for PC hardware and software and would offer half than what is offered in US...

Yeah, they do work much better when you first reformat. But, seems like it don't take long until they need it again. I've got to do mine again pretty soon to and I dread it.

A lot of people say that you shouldn't partition your hard drive, not sure why it's bad. But, I've lost a lot of stuff in the past, so now I always partition them. So, at least all I have to do is reformat, reinstall the OS and all of my programs.

All of my other stuff is on other partitions, so I don't have to worry about losing any of it!

I've been doing this since I've got my first PC. A CD came with my current PC which formats everything (C & D both) and installs fresh Vista with driver etc all installed. It makes everything super fast.
