I really don't get webhosting

There are thousands of web hosts out there. My question is why should I get my own dedicated server with limited bandwidth when I can get shared hosting with "unlimited" bandwidth? Obviously, other than being able to install certain software on the server, but really, wtf?

Why does Google pay millions of dollars for bandwith when they can get "unlimited" bandwidth from hostmonster? Lol!

Does shared hosting slow down when you get high traffic?

I really don't get all of this. I have a few websites and one is getting mad traffic , but I am on a shared hosting with "unlimited" bandwidth. My question is why should I upgrade to a VPS?

    Thanks

There is no such thing as unlimited hosting, read the fine print "There are limits". They just say unlimited because they want to lour you in and host with them but after you hit a certain number of resource usage they suspend your account.

There is no such thing as an unlimited server, they all have limits and companies like to oversell them.

Overselling company is the worst company to host with.

Simple, because on shared hosting someones script could take 90% server usage at points due to a glitch or something and your site could be really slow or not displayed. Also, you are able to customize more things and probably get faster loading times

It's just a marketing tip. With that kind of server, you will be limited by CPU and memory usage. At the end, you cannot use much of space and bandwidth, cause your site will be suspended soon for CPU/memory over usage.

In other hand, you can have *unlimited* thing, if you can pay *unlimited* dollars :)

When you get high traffic, your server had to work even harder.. your webhost probably limit your site to certain amount of cpu/ram.. if you go over that limit, you will probably get a warning and may need to move on to a VPS or dedicated server..

You are not actually getting an 'unlimited bandwidth' after all. :)

Lol thanks guys. I know that unlimited bandwidth is complete bullshit that is why I ask should I upgrade to a dedicated server. Can anybody dig into hostmonsters fine print for me? I really don't feel like reading all of that text :)

So should I upgrade? One of my sites is growing really fast and getting about 500-1k uniques a day and growing, so far I used 2 gb of my "unlimited" bandwidth , so far the site is loading fairly normal.

Also, my new site is going to launch soon and this site I cannot afford to have suspended or load slow

Should I stick with shared? :)

You can be fine with shared. However, choose non-oversell vendor. Even it will be better with someone who can offer shared hosting on cluster, especially separately web and database servers

I'd sure love to see hostmonster handle all the traffic google makes for only a few bucks a month :) This really makes my day. By the way a 1 MB/s symmetrical guaranteed bandwidth costs about 50-100$ a month :)

    Hi,

You need a dedicated server when you want more control (root access) to the server. This includes installing software that a shared host wont allow. Custom hardware configurations.

You need a dedicated server when your web-site uses more resources than they allow you to. (Unlimited is not unlimited!)

There is such thing as Unlimited Bandwidth, but not Unlimited Disk Space! Unlimited Bandwidth are not the really good ones, its better of with like a limit of bandwidth. Just, think about it can you upgrade your hard drive to Unlimited Disk Space? Nope, there is no such thing. I don't think you will even need more than 10 gig of disk space. I have 5 clients on my offshore dedicated server and they only took up 359.67 MB All together.

    ANSWER: NO

Let me tell you how Hostmonster works. I got this email from them today.

So I call them...guy says they won't turn on my account again except to get my data off their server. I paid for a year of hosting and I got over a half year left.

The real BS is that the shared server they put me on has been a piece of crap from the beginning. I called to complain early on but they wouldn't switch me to another box. So I got five months of crap service then they shut me down without so much as a warning.

    Consider yourself warned!

Unlimited hosting is not possible,Companies trick customers into the unlimited hosting thing, its simply not possible.
as there is no magic server that provides unlimited bandwidth.
resources are limited and they will always be.

There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth as you are limited to the bandwidth of the medium you are using and the speed of the devices your connections pass through.

Good luck with that but I don't think it will tell you much. You might spike the CPU cycles for awhile, then go back to normal, and HM won't do anything about it. It's when your site gets regular heavy traffic that they decide to dump you.

I'm sure most other places oversell like HM does. I'm just POd that I got no warning when they shut my site down. Up till 2 days ago, I would have recommended them because they are easy to get telephone support.
