I own .net, worried about .com snatching my idea.

    Hey all,

Let's say I have abc.net, but there is someone who owns abc.com (he bought the domain 3 days before I was going to).

So far, the domain is parked but my .net has been growing like crazy.

I was wondering, did you guys have any situation where you owned a .net and someone else took your idea and hosted it on .com and he became more successful and stole all your traffic eventually?

Possibility is on the higher side, since people (by default) type a .com
i advise you to buy the .com if you can & redirect the traffic to .net :)

This is why you should make your site better. And I think these days if you offer something good on your .net people will remember. Sure they might go to the .com by accident but they would soon realize.

I am now lawyer but this is my train of thought.
It really depends on your domain name. If for example you own BuyFlowers.net and he has the .com, you cannot really blame him if he starts selling flowers. Now if you have branded your site with something like a Clown and they copy you, then I think that you have a case. Now if you own dfwe8e89w.net and they start copying you then you have a really good case.

At least you learned your lesson. Nextime you should prefer .com than .net.

i had a situation where i was searching for names for a new site, after checking to see if they were available (.com) i made a list to decide on the name and get feedback. a couple days later i went to register the name... and guess what! someone bought it 1 day before me. rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg. so a waited a week and went back to check it again and guess what, know it was available. i asked the register how this could happen, they said "sometimes people change their mind after registering and ask for a refund after a couple of days" my theory. people are cruising and picking up what others are searching for and buying them - if they dont get anyoffers after a couple of days they drop them and try to get a refund.
