kormad, I think I know this social networking script and the template you are using is its by default template. its simply seems lack of juice of life. it should be color full , joy full , full of life I mean. You need to consultant with a decent graphic designer which will bring some colors into it and yes the site must be more ajax based like facebook . beauty of facebook is ajax and jquery things that does not let user wait to load up full page but just relevant part

When I was developing exploroo.com I thought to do really big things. later I learnt many new ajax and jquery ways and tons of new ideas to make it a big hit but money always had problem and so now I am generating money first to re born the site. I would prefer to develop the complete site on a php frame work like code igniter or zend or phpcake. frameworks are better while using many other plugins , tools , and jquery myajax, jason of course like facebook login connectivity , chat option with other email like indyarocks.com , sms gateway, google maps , flickr API , you tube API etc. initially your script is ok and you need to find any jquery/ajax programmer who make site really interactive.
Lots of great features, but I would shop around for a really nice and modern looking template. I would also add some chat rooms. Even if members don't use them right away, they will like to see that they are there for when someone else interesting is also online. I'm just curious, unless you mentioned it earlier and I missed it: What's up with the name Hidemypants? Overall, a really great site.
