    Java is good programming language no doubt it is difficult to learn but have very high scope in programming language than PHP. So I recommend you Java.

    Briteday had some very good points and like others on here, have pointed to C. You are totally new to programming and languages and so like in "Introduction to programming" in schools, you should start with C or even easier than that, Visual Basic so that you get the fundamentals of programming. After that it's pretty much just knowing the syntax and branching out to other languages if need be.

    1st learn the programming concepts ex. OOP, design patterns , Data Base concepts then you can easily understand any programming language.. my advice is start with C++ ..do not start with VB

    If you want to start from the scratch learn BASIC as it will help to to build base else you can go for C or C++. VISUAL BASIC is also easy but it depends; what you want to do.

    This is a good point. When you start learning C/C++ from the ground you will get the basic ideas and concepts in programming. Also the best and no so good practices, the differences in code structure and different ways of accomplishing given goals, pros and cons of variable methods in code writing etc.
    Then you will be able to move in a higher level, the Object Oriented Programming (OOP). Understanding that is a MUST in programming.
