Ok, here is the deal, I have a site that has been bouncing from page 1 to the top of page 2 of google for a keyphrase with a competion of 377,000. I have a PR1 site, I have been submitting articles with links in bio to website as well as building links in directories, I currently have 249 backlinks, using backlink watch. The problem is a competitor with a 3 year old site that let his site get suspended because he didnt pay the hosting costs now ranks #1 for the same keyword with PR0 and 2 backlinks. He came in from 14th position to #1... Firstly how can I increase my Search Engine Results position, how come the competitor has shot past me when I have a higher PR and more backlinks. I'm looking at purchasing backlinks and other services on DP, but I want the services to count and not penalise me. Can anyone offer any advice please.
Relevant backlinks with proper anchor text should do the trick. Also, at 377000 results, it should be a no brainer.
Backlinks from directories alone will not be sufficient. You need backlinks from other sites with similar niche and you must vary the keywords coming from the backlinks.
Well, assuming you are targetting "chocolate ice cream" as your keyword, then vary your keywords in your posts with keywords like "chocolate ice cream", "ice cream in chocolate flavour", "chocolate flavoured ice cream", "chocolate based ice cream" and "delicious chocolate ice cream". This will make it more natural to the search engines.
I guess the older the site, the more the site get the chance to have higher PR, so don't waste your time on checking the candy PR bar of your site. The most important is generating backlinks on related sites or collect quality backlinks like post a comments on blogs leaving a links of your site, forums sig and use the keywords of your site when leaving a link.
Sometimes you would be surprised how much competition there can be for a keyword with 'only' 377000 results.

Have you tried checking the traffic of your keywords before doing link building. When doing link building use your targeted keywords as anchor text and better if you would link to related and quality site only.
hi geester, Most of them think that if i a site is having a page rank then his site is going to be in the top position. But this way before, the site which is placed before u might me much older and when it was active then the look and the page rank might be better. will be updating the sites for atleast for 3months so this might be the case. And You said that u r going to to purchase some links, before going for that just go through the page rank of the site u want to purchase. A couple of links from relevant sites should do the trick, try doing a few reciprocals with other sites, possibly in different countries where the site is closely related to the keyword that you are optimising for!
