I need to duplicate my site (for real reason), but will it mess things up?

Currently have a classifieds site, with approx 100k pages. "site:mysite.co.uk" gives about 30k listed. PR4. Generating aver 25k visitors daily.

The company is 100% web based, so can't drop off of search engines.

Anyway, I want to make a 'sister' site, different branding, which uses a sub section of the classifieds. For example, assume the main site is a 'peoperty for sale' site, and this is a 'town houses for sale'. Where around 50% of the adverts will be used.

I want both sites to run independently, so that they take own adverts etc, but give users the option to be able to list adverts on both sites together.

I am worried that Google will see this as duplicate pages, and therefore penailise original site!

My thoughts would be to put the canocialisation code into my pages, letting Google know not to index, and telling it where the original is. But then I am 'missing out' on searches and the second site may be considered a lot smaller than it is.

I know a lot of other companies, especially classifieds, feed from one site to another. For example Oodle.com get most of their adverts from other sites, and supply other sites. How do they get around this problem? Is it beause they are made up from lots of sources, not just one?

    Any ideas appreciated

    Thanks

    bump ...

can anyone help please? I've found out that the canocialisation tag doesn't work across domains now, so have no idea how this should be done!

    Thanks

Can't you simply block the Google bot from crawling the new site?

Could do ... but then it wont work as a standalone site ...

I'm thinking the rebrading of the old site to accomodate both sections ("property" and "town houses" in my example above) may be the best bet

    Any more ideas?

    Thanks
