I need tips for my first contest

I got my basic plan set on a contest I want to run to promote a website... but would like any pointers you care to share with me... particularly how to go about picking the random winner that will be fair and hard to contest the validity of the lucky winner.

The contest is for a site that sells a product in which we plan on giving away something of value in our inventory. I plan on running ads / banners and also an email campaign. These will point to the full press release to be published on this site.

I am thinking we will collect the entrant's emails using our store's member login... so they would have to sign up to be eligible.

    thanks,

You are doing good work. Get targeted traffic as free as possible from sources like social bookmarking sites.

Good you mentioned those bookmarking sites... I tend to forget about them... but they would be a great place to post the press release on the give-a-way ;)

Ok... so the promo is running now... but I am seeing a lot of those signing up are coming from some popular sweepstakes website. Should I be concerned with that ? I just read something where they use auto form fillers and don't pay any attention to the site. (*am checking now whether we have any captcha thing setup on our registration page)

I am also still looking for ideas on how to pick this random winner.
