Hey there! I'm planning on developing my site JACKOLANTERN.INFO into a great resource for Halloween time. The two keywords I am really trying to rank for is FREE JACKOLANTERN PATTERN and JACKOLANTERN. Could any of you give me some tips to optimize my page before a full launch? I'd like to get a bit of a headstart. I plan on a full launch next month (despite what it says on the page you see when going to JACKOLANTERN.INFO, I should change that) but would like to get a head start on the SEO before launch, and more importantly, before Halloween. Any tips are appreciated.
maybe you can use the density of keyword and use keyword prominence for every your article that you will make.
Hi Stefan. You've got time to optimize your site, but you should read these before doing a single thing: Search Engine Optimization FAQ [link: sitepoint.com] All You Need To Know About SEO (currently getting a comprehensive overhaul) [link: forums.digitalpoint.com] Chris Beasley's SEO Guide (also available as a PDF file) [link: websitepublisher.net]
Once your all set with your on-page optimization you should begin the never ending task of off-page optimization. Your main goal will be to build backlinks to your website. Rule of thumb is when it comes to backlinks quality is always better than quanitity. You should always try to make the backlinks come from a site that is directly related to your websites subject. Use as your anchor text the keyword(s) or keyword phrase(s) your specifically trying to rank for in search results.
This will fall under on-page optimization, but don't forget to inter-link your site's pages together using the keywords you're targeting (just don't over-do it). You can learn how to do it here: http://www.websitepublisher.net/article/optimizing-internal-links/
Hell, if Dans gonna keep dumping information why should I not get into the fun! Remember, unique meta description's and title tags for each web page is a golden rule. The title tag should be quick relevant description of the web page, like the title of a chapter in a book so to speak. The title tag should not be abused with keyword stuffing. The meta description element is where you can get into a little more detail. This should be a brief relevant description of the actual web page. As with the title tag, don't just stuff keywords into the description. Don't forget this two items are what appear in search results, lack of using them properly can actually lower your organic traffic due to not "interesting" the searchers. Your title tag and description should be used to "convince" a searcher to click your site in the search results. I can never stress this enough, what good is being in the top 10 search results if your title and description shy away possible visitors.
Which happens to be something I could not agree with more. If you watch the posts I make on various forums enough, you'll see me giving people suggestions on how to optimize their page titles and META descriptions. I think the best example was when I told NinjaNoodles (Peter) how to optimize his file sharing site's home page. http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=5399728#post5399728
once on page optimization is over next is off page optimization, build quality back links to your site. do directory submission, article submission with different anchor texts, blog posting, social book marking, forum signatures, social networks, free classifieds.
For optimizing a site, you need also to know some basic of SEO. I'm sure this site can help you. http://www.seomoz.org/article/beginners-guide-to-search-engine-optimization
