I need some help...

[Note] Apologies if this is in the wrong place!
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, I have a site that is now using over 120GB of bandwidth a day - so a lot! However I need help... I need a server that can handle that much bandwidth without any problems of it going dead/down. Does anyone know of either:

    1) Any ways to minimise bandwidth (I thought of stopping streaming of music / audio files and just having a link to the download page)

    2) A new host, if so which one?

If you were thinking of the latter, then you need to know I don't work and have only a small small small income ... so anything over $30 a month is going to be out of my price range. I know it's not much.. but I just cannot afford anything more.

Any help would be great!! :D

I can recommend BlueHost to you. You can use up to 3TB (and perhaps more) in a month. Come to my site and you can see the BlueHost banner on the right sidebar, click on it to access BlueHost.

Other ways to minimise bandwidth is to ensure that your files are small; for example, instead of using BMP image file, use JPEG, PNG or GIF. These have compression that is almost unnoticeable with your naked eyes.

If you are downloading files, keep them in zipped format, e.g. .tar.gz, .rar or .zip

    Hope these help.

If r site is using photos then try to host the images on free hosting sites and instead of having it in ur hosting. This reduces the bandwidth usage a lot.

You may also want to install some anti hotlinking programs to prevent others from leeching your bandwidth. I find that quite effective especially with audio and video files.

It's ME that hosts the files though :p
    I'm looking into it. :)
    Not photos, but audio files.
The whole point of the site though is that I host other peoples audio files.

Considering the music / audio files are uploaded via a form on my site, because I am the free hosting provider, it wouldn't work would it... me having the files transferred to other hosts/hosting services??

Why do you use servage.net, who said overselling?

Why not use the hosting company you link to, they offer a lot :)

    WOW only $25 for
    Disk Space 250 GB
    Bandwidth 2,500 GB

Thats right within your price range, and how lucky they have have a promo code (look at your signature) which gives $50 discount, wow (eergh... does this means, you would get 25$ transfered to your bank account if you sign up, I'm confused?)

How lucky for you, you dont need to look any further, Im sure they can give you discount for the additional bandwidth you use :)

But I think I know why you dont have account with them... :)

what... who said that.... overselling... where did that come from... anybody?

Sorry I just couldnt stop doing it, just joking.

Seriously dont misunderstand this, but what you want for 30$ is not realistic, at least not if you want a stabile and reliable hosting. What you need is a dedicated server who dont mind the legal music you are hosting ;)

A good dedi server is around $200-and up with that much traffic you have.

I hope you dont mind me asking, how many unique visitors do you have, because 120GB daily is a lot, and if you dont earn enough to pay what it cost to have a dedicated server, then somethings wrong?

Best regards to you and good luck with your business.

The one that I'm linking to in my signature, won't be able to handle it either. I need something for 7.5TB a month, not 2.5TB. As for the not earning enough money... that's AdSense for you.

    I can understand that.

I once had 4 clicks in adsense, which totally gave 0,013$ Im not kidding, I dont know how that is possible?

And a side calculation: you said in your first post over 120GB daily, just to make it easy to calculate lets say 150GB daily x 30 days is equal 4,5TB monthly :) so i dont understand the 7,5TB is this an increase that has happened from the time you started this thread, and posted the first post?

Now whats making me confused is that, although adsense is not giving good, if following calculation is correct you should say "screw adsense, with this much traffic, advertisers will compete to put a banner on my site" :)

As mentioned before your bandwidth was 150GB daily or 250GB?

Lets use them both in following calculation, just for the fun of it :)

And you are hosting music files, so I guess per file is max what? 5mb?

This would mean 150.000mb/5= 30.000 downloads daily or 250.000/5=50.000 downloads daily

People are gready, so lets say each unique visitor is downloading 5 files.

    30.000/5 = 6.000 unique visitors daily or 50.000/5 = 10.000 unique visitor daily

So you have monthly 180.000 unique visitors or 300.0000 unique visitors

And youre telling me, you cant monetize your website?

    Best regards...

I try to monetize it, I even have hotlinking enabled now so visitors MUST visit the site to download the audio files, but still I only have got (as of 17:09 GMT) $1.97 on AdSense. Though to be honest I am thinking that a majority of my bandwidth was being used when people were directly linking to the audio files, so not actually going through the site itself. However I have noticed a dip in bandwidth and a small rise in traffic actually on the site. I need to somehow re-think of where the ads should be.

    Hi again :)

Sorry, do you say you have enable the Hotlinking? dont do that disable it, make your users to visit your site to download the file.

I looked at your site, if Sound upload is what we are talking about?, and you really need to do something about your google adsense.

Although there are not so many advertisers with picture banner as with text banner, I would choose to restrict your ads to only allow picture banner.

I have tried different ad types and companies at my page, and I got higher clicks with picture_banners. But putting an ad is not a one time job, you always need to update your keywords and ads. I am currently trying out AdBrite, because they give you the option to use google adsense if your minimum cpc limit is not reached. I just changed some keywords, so I hope I better clicks now :)

You should change the top google adlink to a small banner, maybe 468x60, the square ad you have in the "middle right" and the bottom banner is nice enough. But most important even though Google Adsense, advise you to not do it, do it restrict your banners to only picture-banners, trust me. At sites like ours, picture-banners work better then text.

    Best regards...
