Ok... I need someone to tell me....

Is it wrong to follow some idea of design down by others?
of coz i am not referring to logo but the placement of links.

for many know about amazon, the default design done by the script are all the same... one company claim that I am follow his "Design"

this is very unfair to me.

    hmm...
lets say, you used to get a site from a company, but due to some reason, they refunded you and you dont owe the site any more. You may like the design but too bad is you dont have the script needed in order to run the site. However, one day you found a script giving free try, and design is almost the same as the one you used to owe. However, you just follow the idea of placement of links... nothing else....
    not even graphic design etc...

    is this against copyrights?
If so, why is there so many people do the same thing as well?
I only heard of graphic copyrights... I didnt heard of placement of menu/links.

What he is saying is take a website, and save it. Then edit it in lets say dreamweaver, replace the images of logos etc with your own, change the content obviously to whatever you want, the links too. Basically just tear it down to a css template, or table template and then insert your own shit.

As a webmaster, I find this acceptable aslong as you are not stealing any content, or images. Because in reality, you can just go make that exact same template from scratch just by looking at the page in a browser, this way just saves time.

You can also say it should be included in the copyright protection, but how will anyone ever know?

I don't think borrowing some design elements from a site is wrong. I mean how many Digg.com style drop down menus have you seen? Does every centered, minimalistic search engine mean its a google rip off? Who was the first person to add links horizontally across the top of their site? What if my H2 tags are Georgia 18px normal font weight? Can I copyright that?

I don't think it should be so. Now this has nothing to do with graphics. Logos, and design elements implementing graphics are indeed copyrightable. But who can copyright where links are placed?

But I may be completely wrong, as I am not a copyright lawyer.

    thanks...
as the "company" claimed that I copy their idea of design, however, as mention, the script I am using is totally different from theirs but default template is almost the same.
Just that the links I see is neat and nicer, I just make it but I didnt copy graphics, logo etc...
I dont understand why one claimed that the idea is theirs when others like amazon does the same first?
so, are they saying they are coping amazon idea?
