It can help you, since Google Penguin algorithm affects websites with bad and spammy backlinks profile. Try to disavow bad backlinks and to find new, "more organic" ones.

I would say that don't build links for your forum at all, because a slight mistake would ban your forum from Google Index.

Try to develop content only this way your forum would have higher ranking in Google!
