You could try press releases, and even better have a look at your competitors, find out where they ae getting their backlinks, and what they are doing right, and see if you can replicate it

 

First up you could try writing articles which has all your keywords in them. Then publish them to established high ranking websites like ezine articles and goarticles. Make sure you include a backlink to your website in those articles.

Also, try setting up blogs with all the high prestige blog sites like wordpress and blogger. Write articles and backlink all of them.

That oughta bring some quality backlinks in ....

Yup some have said it correctly on here. Before you think about backlinks make sure your site is optmized for the keywords you need.

Make sure your site has at least 2 or 3 pages dedicated to a keyword within the top levels, without keyword stuffing. Make them natural and have them linked to each other internally.

Make sure the pages have the keyword in the meta title and description tags, but again not stuffed. It needs to have a balance. So if the site is targeting web design, have the title as "Web Design - Affordable And Quality Work" or something.. so it has something other than the keyword. Same for description. If you have a 20 or 30 word description, try only 2 repeats of phrase in it. Or even better, look at the meta tags of the top page of results and emulate the density they are using.

Use H1 , H2 elements on page to highlight sub titles and again use a few extra related words in them.

Link occasionally from on page text to other relevant keyword pages from the keyword. So you link one instance of "web design" to another targeted page on your site. Link one or two "web design" keywords to your homepage from internal pages also. but don't overdo this. Keeping it natural is the key.

If the site is new, keep away from forum posting, blog commenting and mass social bookmarking. Too much of this on a new site will get you sandboxed. A handful of social bookmarks occasionally does no harm. But blasting 100 at a time is not a great idea unless the site is aged and can get away with it.

Buy some blog posts with links on PR3 and PR4+ sites. Make sure the sites have related content, have decent alexa ranking also. Try stay away from blogs that post about drugs, casinos, adult stuff.

Buy a few directory featured links on pages within directories that have PR. Not just overall domain PR, but look at the page you want to list on. Make sure it has PR, or if no PR, be at least one level down from a page with high PR. Otherwise leave it until the site is aged.

Look through the top 20 or 30 pages of Google for your keywords, e mail sites that look like they have link/resource pages and ask them to swap links. As much as anyone says reciprocal links are not great, for a new or recent site linking with like minded sites is essential to let Google know you are on topic and being asscociated.

You are going after a very competitive niche so it will take time and effort. Make sure you are varying your links a lot using blog directories, blog comments, forum profiles, social profiles, web 2.0 properties, article submissions, press releases, etc etc. You will need to make use of every quality link you can get your hands on to produce some serious results. At the same time be working on building your website as a brand and get the name out there.
