You're using wordpress, so this might help: better-seo-page-title-for-wordpress Being a wordpress problem, as apposed to a google one, you may get better results if you post your question in the content management forum here. That post I linked you to doesn't seem detailed and clear enough, especially since it's dealing more with improving your titles rather than just changing them.
Yeah, you should use a custom setting for displaying your post titles. If you look around in google you'll see how it's done.
