99% of people the answer is no.

The commision os very low if you view the chart that Will provided.

The only way to benefit would be to sell very expensive items or lots of items.

Texbook sites can do really well ffrom amazon affiliates. Amazon has all the textbooks, and since textbooks can cost over $100, you would get atleast $6/order. Sometimes $12. Sell 4 books a day, and you can do ok.

I can see your point, but there's more to it than that. If you search on "second hand smoke" in Google, my site is the ONLY one in the first twenty sites listed that provides an alternative to the SHS paranoia that's being used to harass smokers and kill small businesses. Smokers are harrased everywhere they turn, lied to and lied about, and this is the first place on the list where they can find someone who isn't harassing them. And while "stop smoking" ads is a pretty minor form of harassment, it's still feels like harassment to me, it's still in their face, and I don't want it on my site.

Would Handgun Control want an ad from the NRA on their site? Or vice versa? How about a PETA ad on a fast food site? There are some things that just aren’t approrpate.

And some are just dumb. I took the ads off my podcast page, because they were all for left handed guitars. It was picking up on the political term "lefty." Nobody is going to click on that. Once, it displayed a couple of ads for t-shirts and bumper stickers, but that was only briefly. I just gave up and pulled them from there.

Thanks for all the information on other affiliate programs. I've looked at them, and some of them might work for me. But right now I'm taking everyone's advice and sticking with AdSense, pulling the stop smoking stuff URL by URL. It's tedious and tiresome, but I do seem to be making some progress – now I only get one or two out of four ads on the pages I'm testing it on. I hope I can get rid of them before I hit the 200 URL limit, and get the ads on the most visited pages on my site.

In the meantime, I've earned enough to buy a pack of gum. Not a big pack, just one of the five stick babies.

If your site has decent traffic, with a fair click through rate I would suggest trying adbrite. Initalll you will have to run their network ads ... hopefully in a month or two, once you have a proven track record, the order will come in.

    Hitman,

I can understand your point about the ads, and one of the issues I think you will have with any adnetwork is that there simply aren't going to be a lot of people who have the same viewpoint and products, etc to advertise. the keyword 'second hand smoke' will probably almost always bring up stop smoking products.

I hope you are able to block most of them, and/or find good affiliate programs to work with.

    good luck

You are in a tough situation here. Amazon pays poor, but you will get relevant ads. And the adsense alternatives don;t pay enough of have a large enough ad pool. Maybe yahoo has something better in store by ex-adsense publishers.

    Hittman,

Your problem is quite unique, I think. I did not see your url in the profile, so out of curiosity I did a google seach for smoker´s rights. About half of the first page results were for non-smoker´s rights. I had to go half way down the second page of results before I found any sites running adsense - and that page was actually a joke about (you guessed it) smoker´s rights. Of the adlinks and ad tower on that page all but one were for stopping smoking. I agree with everyone that Adsense is the best game in town but you are fighting an uphill battle, my friend.

If you do not want to rewrite your content - and in any case I think you would still be swamped with non-smoking ads - then why not do what I just did. Think of as many smoker´s rights related terms as you can, do a Google search and go down the results looking for Adsense. When you find it and IF you find any pro-smoking ads - contact the company directly and sell them text, banner or any damn thing you like on your site.

Perhaps they are as sick of their smoker´s products ending up on anti-smoking pages are you are of stop smoking ads ending up on yours.

Ironically, the ads on the top of this page are both for non-smoking products.

Thanks for the advice, e-10 (and everyone else.) I like your idea, and may give it a try.

BTW, the URL for the site in question is www.davehitt.com/facts/ (Strange that I can't post live links until I blather here a few more times.)

I decided to stick with adsense and see if I could de-pollute the ads. A Hittman Chronicle article that isn't read very often generated mostly quit smoking ads, so I used it as a honeypot to gather offending ads for the competitive ad filter. When they finally stopped appearing, I added adsense to the front page of The Facts, still monitoring it for inappropriate ads and eliminating them as they appeared. One that showed up at the top was so offensive = "SECOND HAND SMOKE KILLS" - that I removed the ad code until the filter took effect. Now I get one or two unwanted ads day and have been removing them as they appear.

As I expected, The Facts is generating far more revenue than the rest of the site. Not surprising, as it's the bulk of my traffic, but it also has a CTR of 3%, as opposed to .9 for the articles in the main site and 1.4% for the home page. The highest CTR is for my blog page, @ 5.6%, but there's not a lot of traffic there, probably because I only update it twice a month or so.

Thanks for your help, everyone. Judging from the results so far, I'm not going to make a killing on this, but it will generate enough not only to pay for my web hosting, but buy a few good boxes of cigars a year.

I reviewed some adsense alternatives (services displaying contextual ads according to the content and search criteria) at Adsense Alternatives. The best of them is chitika where I earn about 70% of adsense and I suggest to use its whitessace ads format
The in-text banner advertising services are also great for extra income whether with or without adsense...

The problem with most Adsense Alternatives is that they are still pay per click networks. They don't have enough high volume bidders like adwords, so the payouts are low. What you should do is get into affiliate marketing. The problem there is finding products that convert for your traffic. You need to automate that and use a network that automatically shows the best product for your visitors. Prosperent does that and they do it well. On top of that, they share the commissions with you, so you don't end up stuck with a bunch of 3 cent clicks. Instead you can make 30 dollars, 40 dollars, even over 100 dollars for a single click that converts. It's a beta network right now, so you can use this for the invitation code: VE0XOSZZSTFY1Z
