Hello all, I have a little bit of experience with HTML and CSS. I took a design class as an elective in college. I consider myself to be a novice, but I am familiar with the basics of how these languages work and I am pretty good at modifying and fine-tuning templates to suit my needs. My problem is, I usually do not know the keywords to search for, to find a template to work with. I am starting a family history website, where I will be archiving old letters and pictures belonging to my grandparents. I want to have a database of all the documents and pictures, and I want the website to display them based on checkboxes clicked by the site user, corresponding to attributes of the picture. For example, when you shop for something on lowes.com you can drill down to what you want by specifying price range, brand, color, etc. So on my site, if someone wanted to see pictures of Aunt Sally at the 2004 Christmas Party, they would check Sally, the year 2004, and Christmas. Or if they just wanted to see all the pictures of Sally, they would just check Sally. I also want the site to display thumbnail size versions of the picture or document, which, when clicked on, will launch the full size version in a separate tab or window. I got a quote from a webdesigner for $2,000, for a flash version of this. I can't afford that, so I thought maybe there is a way to accomplish the same thing in a less fancy way that I could do myself. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? Thanks, Anna Bruen
Hey Anna! I think i can help you with that, from your post i understand that you want a mini content management system and Simple and advanced search option for your site. If you have designed your website template you can show it to me as well. We can start work at a very small price. we can discuss more details if you like , you can contact me at Regards, Dezigncore
You can try to create a wordpress blog and create categories and sub categories based on the way you want your information to be presented. For example Main category Sally Sub Category 2004 Sub category of 2004 Christmas. Then put all your info of Sally where it is applicable. So when a visitor wants to see Sally's picture of 2004 C'mas, they just need to do a few click and see the result. You can also create/get free photo thumbnail for wordpress easily. You can do this with no design cost. But if you want custom wordpress theme then designing one may cost you around $100 - if you want to go cheap. I do not do wordpress theme design for others - this is just my estimate looking at what you are looking for. Have a try with wordpress - it is free and easy to use and MySQL database is also free.
