I too have sometimes encountered websites/webservers that choke at even a small number of simultaneous connections. Even worse, some begin to make read timeouts (i.e. stops sending data midway through getting response content for a page). In those situations, I would have to configure my crawler as well to scan with less connections and higher timeouts = slower scan

Indeed. I do not think you can find a single post where I claim mine to be "unlimited". There are always limits. Even Google data centers have limits.
