I'm living in Canada and need a laptop. Only mentioning where I live because I'm willing to order from the states so I don't have to convert my US funds. That being said I've used a IBM forever with success but I'm leaning towards DELL but also curious about HP, ACER, TOSHIBA everything. Please list what your fav is and why and any issues you've had with it if you can. I'd greatly appreciate any input anyone has to offer. I like DELL prices and all the problems I"ve heard are mainly due to Windows Vista; my sisters dell fell apart after 2 years but I think she may of been overly rough with it. Anyways any feedback is appreciated! I'm looking for something with 2G of ram and preferably dualcore.
I am currently working on an HP laptop and I absolutely love it! I own one of their business class models and one of their home models and both have been solid machines. Not one problem with either of them. I would lean towards getting one of the small business models if you are looking for performance. Used to work for a company that would sell HP laptops to governmental agencies and we would hardly see problems with them, and if we did, HP support is top notch!
I am on a ASUS laptop and works great, pricing was fairly OK, I could get a DELL for less however I am not satisfied with DELL's computers as I have a desktop at home which I bought a year ago and it is really annoying, weird errors showing up at times and so on. I don't use that desktop anymore, I've completly replaced it by a HP desktop, works much better! Go for an ASUS laptop, you won't regret it. - Meti
If you're used to IBM, id recommend Dell or HP. Im personally trying to decide to buy this HP or a macbook
This is the sister model to the one I use and home and I think it's a really good buy. I priced out others and really feel I got more performance and reliability from the HP than I would have with Dell or the like. Highly recommended!
For the best value, get an Acer laptop off of ebay. Make sure to check the seller's feedback first though.
Never buy a laptop in store.. Buy from a place like NewEgg, where you can find good prices on pretty much every company. They also have really good support and they do let you return your items. Shipping isn't to much, they usually run free shipping promotions.
I bought a COMPAQ laptop (presario V2000), and it gets so WARM, ugh. I'm almost burning my fingers to type when it's start getting really hot.
Yikes...... Contact them about that. All laptops will get warm, but they shouldn't get to the point where they are burning your fingers.
Okay, maybe I'm slight exagerrating, lol, but it gets VERY warm. I've had it for more than 1 y. in a half, it's probably too late. It started doing that recently because I use it a lot more now.
I have a Compaq (HP) that I am very happy with. I found a great deal at Best Buys. Avoid buying any at stores like Walmart because most of their computers are made for them with different model numbers and I think with inferior parts. I bought my first HP laptop there and I had nothing but problems and when I called for HP support they switched me all around until they could figure out what I had for a laptop because of the weird model number. Look for at least 1 GB of ram but more if possible because you will need it to run Vista successfully. Get a dual core processor, I prefer the AMD Turion Duel but I am sure the Pentium is good too. Once I used duel core though, I hate my old computer with single core processor. If you plan to use windows and not change your operating system, look for Vista Premium and not basic. There are more features and the cost to upgrade is a lot more after the fact. Be aware that it is a headache to get your old printers and software to work with Vista. I have had my new laptop since September and I am still have problems with stuff being compatible. If if it says compatible with Vista, sometimes it still doesn't work. Buy the most machine you can afford because it is cheaper to buy it now than to upgrade it later. Make sure to shop around and when you see one you want, look for reviews and make sure you are not buying a problem machine. Good Luck!
Like you, all my personal notebooks are IBM. I got an X61 a few weeks ago -- nice and light, 2 gigs of memory and a 160GB hard drive. The office gave me a HP business class, back-breaking, nx6320 replacement recently as well. It's not bad, but if you write a lot like I do, then I can type much faster on the keyboard of an IBM than I can on a HP laptop. And the battery lasts a lot longer on the IBM as well, which is a major factor for me if I am stuck at an airport waiting for a connecting flight.
Between Dell and HP, Dell almost always has some good deals out there with some decent spec, especially on those new Vostros. HP is the looker. Dell is ugly.
Had an acer I gave to my wife good laptop. I now have an hp zv6000 best top I ever owned. Gave my wife's ze5000 to my brother all have been good tops. Can't say a bad thing about any one of them.
