Yes, it may come with the host ... if not, be sure the host supports phpbb before going through the hassle of downloading, etc.

If your host doesn't have phpbb or a like program, or if they don't support php at all, there are plenty of third party sources that you could host offsite.

one other thing to consider if your host does offer phpbb hosting - Mine does, but the install of PHPBB that comes with my control panel is 2.0.13, which i believe is about 4 versions old. If your host does support PHPBB and offer it, you might check your forum software version, and be sure to update it to the latest.

Excellent advice, vectorgraphx. Some hosts will install even an earlier version and there are some known security vulnerabilities, especially in versions prior to about 2.0.10 -- the current version is 2.0.17 and can be downloaded at www.phpbb.com

That looks, at first glance, like an interesting package for a PHP forum, but for someone who is just starting up, I'd steer them away and point them toward phpBB from something this new for a number of reasons: large support community, numerous MODs and themes for almost unlimited customization, etc.

Why don't you have a go at a totally free forum with hosting first, just to see the admin side of things. There are 2 that know of (although there are probably loads more). For invision try http://invisionfree.com/ and for phpbb and/or Invision try http://www.freeibforums.com/ .

These should give you a bit of an insight into how things work.

    Good luck:)

If all else fails try http://www.freecpanels.com -- you can host as many free website (with cpanel admin) as you like and you have fantastico script installer that installs phpBB with one click. We use it as our support forum and it's great!! Although after using vBulletin now for a while at DP ....I really like this one too :)....hmm...should I make the change!?

The great thing about phpBB is there is an enourmouse source of information if you get stuck and a great support forum!

    cheers,
    chris
