I would recommend InvisionBoard or vBulletin.

If you go wtih phpBB, either know a lot about security or have a host that knows a lot about security because since it is open source, it is the most prone to being exploited. I've seen some great forums with phpBB that got exploited before.

Pay the $85 per year and get VBulletin; it's worth the investment if you're serious about running a forum.

VBulletin is worth the money if you are going to run a serious forum.

I have also used phpbb without any issues - incredibly easy to install and manage also if you use cpanel hosting with Fantastico

I have never used vBulletin or others before so cannot really compare them but have been happy enough with phpbb (especially the price :))

PHPBB would be your best bet for a free one.

drupal has a forum module built in, the current one is lacking in features however drupal 6 supposedly has a much better forum module built in.

PHPbb here, also never experienced any others, but, I was up in about 30 mins, it's harder to get people posting than it is to get it set up.

take it from a person who has built around 20 boards and promoted another 5 boards to each over 20k members and I will say pay the money now for Vbulletin and use that because I did many boards in phpbb and out of the 6 boards i did in phpbb all six were later switched over to vbulletin
