    Hey guys,

I want to start a directory and will be using the free php script to start with but I would like to buy a database with over 2,000 links in to get me going.

    Let me know

Sorting your own links in a given subject area would be a much better starting point :)

Why do you say that? Doesn't it look good to have a bit of custom to get off the ground?

Nothing is custom about somebody else’s database. Quality well edited databases are worth quite a bit of money as well. I might consider selling you one for say $200,000+

Dave, I don't think you understand the problems with using a DB with 2000 existing listings. What you are talking about ultimately is a lot of duplicate content.

Many directory owners go through a lot of effort to avoid duplicate content. They re-write titles and descriptions, they use unique category structures, etc.

What Stoner says is spot on - a well edited DB is worth some good money because a lot of time was invested in making it unique and contains only quality sites.

If you need to populate your directory, make it free for a while. Just be prepared to deny many submissions that are of poor quality. And don't be afraid to add sites yourself.

Sigh at the above. I'm not to bothered about my SERP's with this directory. Besides I wouldn't be so sure that google hates duplicate content.

I have 2 blackjack websites with exactly the same content and both rate top 3 on the first page for their search terms.

It's one thing have a single page that is duplicated one time. It's an enitrely different ballgame when you have the exact same submissions that were approved in 1000 other directories...

Well then you obviously don't give a shit about the directory industry and how your actions make other serious owners around here look. Enjoy the red reps people give you.

If you really paid for the database, I hope you didn't pay more than 5 bucks.
Just announcing a new directory on DP and other forums would give you about a thousand links in about a week.
