You should have wait a bit longer (2 weeks). Who knows that the new backlinks just cause a google dance and will come back later from serps. What type of links did you made before your site disappear and what contents did you actually changed?
Your site might rank high again. Check your site's competition though due to new strength they might have.
True, the competition might have jumped past you! If it's gone all together, keep working at it! it should come back eventually.
You made these changes because Panda or Penguin hit your site? It's not a major issue, if you erase a few poor backlinks, if you improved content and reduced SEO juice,, over-optimization... Now: get more new content on, then do some SM advertising, buy a few contextual/editorial links. It should pay off in a matter of weeks, maybe months. Depends on your PR. Perhaps Google de-listed you? Check where your site is located for 10-20 keywords and if it's way down, then you might have been de-listed, heavily penalized. So, if this is the case, then file a reconsideration request - if it was Penguin...
