WOW! Some of this stuff is scary..

Honesty is the *ONLY* policy. All other paths eventually lead to bad places (and not always in the way you think they will)...

"Fake it until you make it"

For some reason this little incident comes to my mind:
... and look the situation now.

I would say it depends of the lie. You could have some problems claiming that you earned $xx in a month for instance. Because someone could ask your proofs.

But you could easily write a text letting people think you do very well, when it's not the case. Look all the sales letters in Internet Marketing, nearly all of them let you think that if you buy their ebook or software you'll be rich tomorrow. And they add an "invisible" disclaimer at the very bottom of the page. Some of them are rich, no doubt about that, and use these techniques since a long time.

This is not an advice, personally they just make me sick.

And that's pretty much the bottom line of how successful somebody will get by trying to lie :)

No, you should build an honest business instead of relying on any kind of lying for marketing purposes. You'll always be exposed at some point, and it not only risks destroying your current business but your potential to launch any successful business in the future. Don't be stupid when it comes to your business.

You are probably correct, but the other users are right when they say it works sometimes, I believe it can be successful if you know how to pull it off - celebrities do it all the time when they pull publicity stunts, etc. Just a cheap and effective way of marketing. The only problem is if you get found out and then it could potentially destroy your business - which isn't good :D.

Celebrities don't operate in the same way as a business owner. "All publicity is good publicity" can apply to a lot of them, but it absolutely doesn't apply to businesses.

Publicity stunts also aren't always cheap, and most people have learned to see through them. There are enough honest cheap marketing tactics out there that lying is never necessary.
