    Hi

I just write my site as I think it. Why are Keywords so important. ?

How do you think of a key word for the page you have written.

If you could think of one word to describe the page you have just written. Would that be a key word..

    Cheers Possum..

Right, imagine you are writing a website about computers, your main keyword would most probably be computers. The reason you do this is because you want people to be able to type the keyword in a search engine and find relevant information. For example, if someone searched for ,'computers' in Google and your website had nothing to do with computers, people would leave your website straight away. That is why keyword targetting is important.

But competitive keywords like, 'computers', these days would be almost impossible to gain SERP positioning, therefore you target associated and less competitive keywords, e.g. 'computer help' or 'computer tutorials'. This way you can get secondary traffic from your less competitive keywords.

If you are on about deeper pages on your website, you simply make keywords that are associated with the page you are writing. Now let's say your main website is about computers, but your page you are writing is about CPU's, you would put, 'cpu' as your main keyword, and all other less demanding keyphrases further on.

I would worry too much about META information (although it IS important), but I would worry about in-page SEO e.g. ALT tags, link titles and anchor text, H1 & H2 tags, inbound/outbound linking, etc.

If you would like to know more in depth about SEO then I suggest buying and reading a good SEO book, like Aaron Wall's SEO Book.
