I just posted a project on a PR6 site and came back after dinner and it was already in Google. Is this common?

If the site is ranked high and is spidered alot your site will get indexed very fast. It happens alot when you get a good link on a high pr site.

based on logic and not SEO skills, I would think if a site is being spidered (crawled) even a PR1 site would get you indexed. Sometimes it can be a matter of luck

Higher PR sites tend to get crawled more often. Hence there are more probabilities that you get indexed faster if you have a backlink from a high PR site.

that is obvious my point is you can get lucky with timing also, submit while being crawled or just before a crawl

Like others have said, higher pr sites usually get indexed faster than normal or lower pr sites.

I think you can sometimes get lucky. For example I have a brand new site that I created last week and decided to add a new article to it yesterday. To my surprise I checked my awstats and noticed I had a visitor from google almost instantly after adding the article using the search term I was targeting. I typed the search term into google to find my page listed 5th. So within half an hour of adding an article to a brand new site it was indexed and already sending traffic...not bad google :)
