Any first timer tips? I've ordered a managed VPS, should have it active tomorrow to tinker with before I move accounts. I've have experience with cPanel and WHM and will have both on the VPS, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to have alot more options now. I'm exited, I now have full control and it's the first step towards a dedicated, which I'll hopefully be in by this time next year. I've got to move all my accounts over (around 20), whats the best way to do this? I don't have shell on the hosted server. Do I have to download and re-upload? That'll suck.
Funny, I just read this thread Various Tips for VPS administration. As far as moving, I understand that WHM has an import feature - but to be honest I am a complete newbie with whm. I assume that import is from 1 whm account to another. Maybe that helps
Wow thanks dude thats some good info. I'll take a look and see if those settings help once I get in there. So far, all that's greek as I've never messed with any backend settings before.
Glad that seems helpful. I get the feeling that the most important factor with vps service configuration is memory conservation.
Who did you get your VPS from? I've got a paid from PowerVPS, their support is awesome and the servers are pretty damn good too. If you've got WHM on both servers (the old and the new) you can use the copy function to copy your accounts from one to the other. Works pretty good, I've done it a bunch of times with no problems.
Are you SURE you want to put ALL your eggs in one basket and have all the sites come from 1 IP address? My preference would be to move one or two domains that don't matter very much and play with them until I felt confident. Even then I am not sure I would want all my sites in one place.
I work in the web hosting company for nearly 3 years now, but I highly suggest that you DON'T move your accounts... This is because, soon you will get your own server and you will then have more accounts than before and this usually takes nearly weeks to change...
Totally agree. I have a VPS there and love it. I am about to jump up to a dedicated with them in a few weeks. Yeah, order a few batches of IPs and use them for your domains, don't just use the 3 or 4 they give you. I am using like 15 ips right now.
Well, I've been running 18 websites off of the same shared IP, and that IP was shared with others on the server. So, going to the included 4 IP's is a step up. Plus, I don't want to carry the cost of a reseller account plus a VPS. I don't budget that much money for my little internet ventures.
My sites are what pay the bills, so the idea of putting all of them on one server where I was planning to fool around with powerful, unfamiliar commands would terrify me If yours are hobby sites thats different.
