Google can't just mark all profile backlinks as spam because there are a lot of genuine profile links. However if you comment on low quality forum (spammed all over) chances are Google won't consider that links. If you want to build backlinks using profiles it's a good idea to focus on high quality and well established forums. High PR, moderated forums on old domains are perfectly OK ;)

    Thanks!!

    Can I also ask............
If you have a backlink on a profile and the profile page is a PR0 and the site home page is a PR6......what value does Google give your backlink. A PR0 or PR6??

It should be considered as PR0.. I really don't believe in these profile links as they aren't even get indexed in google.. They seems to be low quality backlinks.. Even directory submissions work better than them.. (atleast for me ) :)

Until they aren't indexed by google.. They are obviously worth less..

You always need to work hard on those links to even get them indexed.. Like pinging them, rss submissions and social bookmarking submissions..

Once they are indexed they are worth something but they are not considered spam.

Yeah, I don't think Google could do that because there are so many good normal profile backlink with high quality, if Google do that, maybe get lots of complaint. Of course, if you want to build backlinks using profiles it's a good idea to focus on high quality and well established forums. High PR, moderated forums on old domains

Less than PR 0, more like PR N/A...and I wouldn't doubt that Google will be catching on to anyone using that Angela's Method baloney.

Google doesn't negate the value of a profile link as spam unless it really is spam. Most profile links are single links that are a reflection of the users true interest. Google is pretty generous with real links like that. If it's a profile page on a spam site however, then it probably does negate the value of the link.

PR is still an ok-ish measure of the value of a link, but Google uses a much more complicated link scoring system than it used to.

These factors make a good link:

    * Link in the main text body
    * Link on a page with high PR
    * Link on a page which has incoming anchors similar or the same as the anchor of your link.
    * Link surrounded by text relevant to your anchor.
    * Link does not have the nofollow tag.
    * Zero or very few other outgoing links.
    * Absence of common spam words (viagra etc) surrounding the link.
    * Link is on a domain which Google "trusts", i.e. the authority effect.

Don't just think in terms of profile spam vs comment spam. Look at the page, and determine how many of these factors are in effect, and to what extent.

For relevance, a web 2.0 spam blog is normally best.

For authority, profile links can be halpful.

For PR juice, comment spam is generally the best.

To get the best effect, blend all these tactics together into a powerful backlink strategy.

An afterword on juice: If you have a link on a PR6 blog page which has 50 other links, you will still get more PR juice than you would from your profile pages because pr n/a gives less than 1/50th of the juice of a PR6.

Blog spam will give you little link juice but you can get a bunch of quick links.

Profile spam will give you alot more link juice but it also takes more time.

you get link juice or pagerank transferred based on the PR of the linking page, not the home page. so in this case, it would be PR0.

to answer your original question, no way google will treat all profile links as spam. i have a profile on DP and i actively participate in this forum. will google count my profile link on DP as spam? no way... (well, DP profile page is nofollow but you got the point)

i don't see why google would treat profile links as spam. that's the reason no follow attribute was invented. if u want to keep spammers out, convert to no follow. if not, moderate your forum or blog.

I do wonder what % of links are actually regarded with any level of value by Google. Profile links are a commonly spammed area.

Just remember, web sites do not rank.....only web pages rank. With that in mind if a home page of a site has a PR6 ranking that means that that page is considered an authority in the subject matter as determined by Google more so than a web page with the same subject with a PR5. Just because the page you are posting on might have a PR0 or just not ranked doesn't mean that a link from that page on that site is a bad thing. For instant this page I am replying on is showing NO PAGE Rank (at the time I am posting this), but that doesn't mean a link from this page is bad. All links are good, its just some links are much better than others (unless its from a known spam site (page) of course). At the end of the day its about the reputation of the site that helps in building value to another page.
