once you find out what it is, you can decide what to do.

I have people give me old computers all the time. Sometimes they are total junk, I maybe pull the hard drive and memory and scrap the rest. Sometimes they are great machines. I just had someone give me a 1.4 ghz dell optiplex 256 ram, 40 gig drive and ran perfect, I wiped it and installed fedora linux on it, and it is a great machine, not a single problem. They just thought it was too slow. Only thing I did was upgraded the ram but I had ram sitting around here that I could use, so no cost. I bet you it is faster than 50% of the web servers out there too...

Careful, if you've never upgraded or touched the inside of a computer before, especially an old one, then don't try it unless you read up and get very educated first. Otherwise you could make some big mistakes and screw everything up or ruin your new parts, if you decide to upgrade. Though, I'm not sure what you consider "old" as some people in the computer world consider something that's 1 year old to be "old" while others think 10 years is "old". If it really is old, then just get a new one as it probably wouldn't be worth it, especially with the old style case and whatnot. :)

Sounds like you've just inherited a pristine Babbage Engine.

Congratulations, it should be worth a bunch when Antiques Roadshow pull through town.
