Okay, my hosting company contacted me today and told me I have to upgrade to a VPS because I'm using too much cpu memory. However, their VPS's are unmanaged. Up till now I've used shared hosting. They said I'd be in charge of daily maintenance and any additional features. What does this "daily matenance" entail? How hard will it be for me to move to a VPS and run it on my own? Looking for some general guidance here. Thanks, Daniel
I personally don't ever recommend running a VPS on your own. It's always good to have a company manage it for you -- unless you're a pro with server management. I strongly recommend switching to the company I'm using then, LiquidWeb. I just ordered a VPS from them last week and I couldn't be any happier than I am right now! Killer prices AND ITS MANAGED!
I use LiquidWeb to, but if they ask you to upgrade because of high server load, dont do it. They asked me and there was no need. Servint.net is good also.
They meaning my current host or LiquidWeb? My current host (asmallorange) told me I was using 20-30% of the allowed CPU time available. They basically told me I had to upgrade or find a new host.
I will vouch for Servint as well. I was new to the whole VPS world and they have been so helpful and patient with me. Any stupid question, they will usually answer within a few hours!
i went straight into a dedicated when i started a hosting company over 2 years ago, i never regretted it, go head on learn for yourself, don't have people manage it imo.
I'm more concerned about my current sites. I don't want them to face technical problems or downtime because I'm incapable.
If you dont have any special interest for servers, go managed. Yes, I vote for servint.net. But beware, if you use more than the agreed bandwidth they charge $1 per 1 Gb, very expensive. Once I used 300 Gb to much, a very good lesson
Thanks. I was hoping someone could tell me what would be "involved" in managing it myself and how difficult it would be. I'd prefer not to change hosts.
Oddly enough, I switched from asmallorange to LiquidWeb about a month ago. I was on shared hosting from ASO and now I have a VPS with LiquidWeb. I'm very happy with it and I'll probably keep it, even if I get an additional dedicated server in the (hopefully near) future.
what you cna do is, get a management service and try to learn. and later switch to self managed. but i personally prefer self managed and learning at WHT and google. i started with shared, then VPS and dedi.
