I'm sure not everyone will agree but exit pop-ups increases conversions big time. I have 2 of my sites using them and both have seen sales for folks planning to leave the site. You can google 'exit popup script' or something to see which one fits the bill. Now I realize it may be an annoyance for some - but hey if it increase conversions, will you do it?
It just depends on your offer. If you want to build long term relationships with customers this is not a good practice. If you view everything as one time then it is.
I have to admit, they do work. But, if it comes up every time for each visitor who comes into the site and leaves, that visitor may leave for good. For many webmasters, it's hard enough getting repeat traffic as it is. Here's a good line to keep in mind: Make a sale, lose visitors. It's good for sites that you know they will not come back, or, at the very most, comes back for one more time. Like, say, a site selling a product.
Brad I disagree... How can it be good practice to further help somebody? It all depends on what mindset you are coming from. If you don't believe in your products then sure, even telling somebody about it is bad practice and a pop-up sure is bad... But if you care about the customers then you want as many sales as possible(not for you, but for them), and anything that increases conversion and is ethical, legal and moral is awesome! If you can offer something for less or give something away for free to people who are on the fence... heck... even better. I say definitely use them! - Chris
I have to say that I hate such pop-ups (and generally try to block them). They make me less inclined to make a purchase, rather than more. I do realise, however, that some internet users will be persuaded to buy as a result of seeing them.
It will, but its short term. If you are dependent on return visitors, exit pop-ups annoy them, probably will dissuade them from visiting back (unless you are providing a sticky feature that will make them helpless but come back). But if it is from SERPS, then you don;t expect these visitors back, and so you can bet on popups.
