I have seen a huge increase in traffic but don't know why

are you tracking your keyword rankings? Look at Analytics, see where the traffic has come from and the referring keywords. It's likely these keywords have jumped on to page one in the results pages. Also, check referring sites, your visitors maybe be coming from somewhere else that you weren't aware of.
