Why not email each and everyone of those 500 directories and ask them why? Here is a short form letter you can copy and paste to send. Dear sir or madam, Hello, you are one of the 500 or so web directories I had submitted my website to, I am asking why you do not send me traffic. Regards, ~Concern submitter.
You can't depend web directory as your traffic source. Better optimize your site with some niche, create useful and unique contents, then your site will indexed well at SEs. Remember, the best incoming traffic is traffic from SEs.
Did you submit by hand or by automation, did you submit to the correct category and stuff, were they free or paid?. I know all this sounds pretty standard but if directory owners want an easy life if they can so helping by submitting properly helps them help you.
yea, like the others are saying, as i learned here, that most directories are for the pr, BUT 500, you should get at least a couple of clicks. I have gotten a few clicks from them. But they also may have been from other submitters like us just looking around.
Those are probably all free directories, so you should not expect to get any traffic from those. Plus, who knows how many of those even listed your site.
my understanding of directories is only the submission service people visit them besides the owner who look for approving/rejecting the links. And submit service is run by professional who just directly go to the submit page and run back But on ayhu.com I got lot of visitors through Google and home some of my clients are getting traffic.
The OP is asking a valid question. It is true that link popularity increments are the primary bnefit of being in directories, plus your site , if approved by quality directories , does look more qualitative to SE's IMHO. However, ultimately, there is no reason why directory owners should not attempt to develop traffic flow I think this is necessary
Did you check that your site is approved and listed in all those 500 directories ? I think it's not listed in most of them yet.
Also traffic would depend on the keyword you are using in the title etc.. this is what i saw in my directory. Its a free directory, but gets people from google for the keyword which is the title for this listing - http://www.the-free-directory.info/detail/link-1788.html Depends on a lot factors though! and as people said, featured links might also help.
You probably submitted to 500 free ones right? With an average of PR1 or PR0 that get NO traffic to begin with... Most dir's the only visitors are SEO's looking to submit. Go to some big ones and make a keyword rich description / title and you will.
You might be wrong.. Not all directories take a time of 3 months to approve a listing. it can be from 1 day to an year, or never.. I take a max. of 3 days to approve links, and many others here.
Well.. A few points first... You submitted to FREE directories as im fairly confident you did a submission package deal threw one of various companies that do this type of work.. When you do FREE submissions theirs a LONG wait 9 out of 10 times usually that directory gets so swamped with submittions that they take up to a few months to accept or decline and/or some editors just basically open the doors for free submissions and allow the submissions to come in and aren't worried about it as they could care less and their attitude is i will get to it when i have time... (SOME NOT ALL) As for traffic... Most directories are now adding more content as well as interaction based tools so as to keep submitters and or visitors at their sites longer for the chance of sending you traffic as todays directory owners are being more competitive and savvy with each other which offers the submitters more in the end... At this moment only a few directories send traffic which is great but do keep in mind that todays directory and yesterdays are 2 different types as the directories of old would send traffic as that was their main purpose before the search engine came along which now handles that aspect better. The reason for you to submit to directories is easy enough... So that your website and or blog CLIMBS the search engine rankings so that THEY can send you organic traffic and also to RAISE your PR level which influences googles algorithmic patterns which has a small but important significance in their engine. thx malcolm
One has to know the basic ROLE of web directories. IMO - their basic role is to help you OPTIMIZE you site for better SERPs. Just forget directories and see how many links you get and how much it cost and how long it takes for your site to get indexed/optimized for good SERPs. I do not think each and every directory will give you direct traffic but it can certainly help you get well optimized. So consider it from that angle.
