It's all about the content. Work on your content. Have you told all your friends, coworkers and anybody you know about the sites? Free advertisement.

Try different things and see what works for your sites.

Here's an idea...the chemistry tutor site is a sure thing, but you need to get creative. Do something cool with chemistry, be careful with explosion stuff, but there are a ton of other neat things you can do...I'm sure of it. My brother is a middle school science teacher and I send him stuff all the time. Teachers are dying for things to keep kids interested, they are so bogged down in teacher planning and school buearacracy that they don't have time to come up with off the wall things to make their students heads spin.

It doesn't have to be much...something like this example:
    http://digg.com/videos/educational/Magic_Sand_2

Once you do some cool video post a link to it on the Make magazine blog - http://www.makezine.com

And on YouTube - I would think you will get more convertable traffic from the makezine site.

I would also find out where middle school, junior high and high school science teachers hang out and ask them to mention your site to students who just don't "get it"

That should give you the traffic you need in the short term -

I would suggest you do some announcements at social networking sites. For the http://forums.mychemistrytutor.com, you can find some .edu links and see if there are forums or discussion platforms attached to the site, then you can participate there with the view of getting visitors. You did not talk about submitting your site to directories. If you have not done it, you may begin to consider that as it will bring you some traffic in the future via backlinks.
