    Hi,

    Hi,
I bought a computer in Thailand with Vista on it. Turns out the Vista is a non-authentic version. Im not sure what this means (cracked Im guessing?) problem is I let people use the internet on my computer in my coffee shop and there has been a recent crackdown on fake microsoft packages with stiff fines for culprits (a local shop just like mine was hit with a $3000 fine)
My friend has sent me a genuine, legal registration key for the package.
Now how do I go about removing the bad version and replacing it with the new legal version?
Can I do it without a CD?
If I just go to softpedia and download a trial version and then enter the full version activation key, will my version then be a full, legal version?

I am sorry if the answer to these questions seems simple, I am real novice in the computer world

    Any advice is much appreciated

What do you mean your friend sent you a geniune, legal registration key?? Where did he get that genuine, legal key? Did he pay for it? Did he already use it on his computer?

Registration keys are not meant to be shared. Even if your friend legally bought it you will still be caught using a illegal copy of vista because its not your personal key.

If your afraid and sure that you'll be caught the only solution is get your own license copy of windows vista. imho

OK, this "friend" is somebody Ive been doing business with online for a while- never met him. He claims he is a licensed reseller and can create as many keys as he likes and that the key is 100% legit. Is there a way to check this?

Sounds suspicious... Nah I'll bet its not. its easy to google thousands of serials on the net. You may even fool microsoft.com and validate it to make it look like geniune copy of windows. But it still doesnt mean you possesed a legal license especially when authorities came down knocking on your door and check your registration keys.

If theres really a crackdown on your area for unlicensed softwares and you dont want to be fined. The only way to be sure is to personally buy a license copy from a software vendor nearest you.

It's probably from a MSDN admin account.

They are legit keys, but they are only meant to be for personal use.
