Personally I don't think using Captchas is all the good at preventing spam in the first place. When I was using it I still got tons of spam. Since installing a spam guard, I get nearly 0 spam submissions On another point, when I had my image verification enabled, I was contacted by a potential client that ask me to turn it off. He said he would like to submit multiple sites and wanted to do it as quickly and easily as possible. I ended up getting 19 featured and regular listing from him. Now I could of said no and told him it's no big deal to do it but I'm 100% certain he would have just passed and went somewhere else. Also have you ever noticed how Chris(mysticmedia) and others ask people to disable their captcha? I can only assume he would like to do submit a butt load of his sites and just wants do do it as easily as possible.
Captcha does not have to mean image verification. I've never used anything but a text-based captcha, with trivia and maths questions, and it's effective as well as accessible. Image-based captchas suck, I agree.
You don't have delete few spam submissions per day? But you have time to moderate 50 paid submissions per day.
I have captcha disabled on www.bqtm.com since 1 month or more.\ No problem or spam submissions till yet
I think captcha is there to cut down on auto submissions even though it's not 100% effective. That's because many coder can easily come up with scripts to read the captcha and bypass it. However, it's still one of the easiest to implement and i guess that's the reason why it is so commonly used.
I said that I use both image and text captchas. It could easily be set to only text. To each his own.
I think your time can be better spent watching this new filck... Transformers And also the capta in some is retractable meaning one day i use it the next i dont so i see nothing really informative as the newer scripts have the on and off switch so.. but hey whatever floats your boat.. thx malcolm
i disabled my captcha last month and until now no spam are being submitted on my directory. www.qoobe.org/submit.php
Like many others here, I agree that if the image is actually legible and the verification process actually works, I don't have much problem. It's the fact that so many require mulitple attempts that drives me crazy. There was one site (I don't recall which) that offered an audible. It was very cool. Press a button and the voice gave a 4 digit number. I actually liked it! /*tom*/
