Hey guys. I've recently bought a site which includes a very active (but fairly new) forum. I offer a free service, so quite a few of the posts are about support issues.

The forum (site) came with three staff volunteers.

    I am wondering about:

1.) Moderators & Staff: Do you find people are often eager to moderate? What are your thoughts on offerig incentives to your mods, and if so - what exactly?

2.) Something like a VIP Section: Do any of you incorporate some sort of paid system into your forum?

3.) Contests: Anybody run contests in the forum? How'd that go?

Thanks for your inputs guys. It's getting over 100 regs. a day and I'm a little overwhelmed.

    Cheers,
    Mark

FIRST OF ALL THOSE WHO ARE REGULAR POSTERS IN YOUR FORUM ,OF THEM 50% WOULD LIKE TO MOD THE FORUM OR MAY BE 100% WILLING TO DO SO THAT TO WITHOUT ANY INCENTIVE BUT IT IS ONLY TRUE WHEN YOU HAVE A BIG TRAFFIC OR MEDIUM TRAFFIC FORUM.
i give them incentive in the following way:- by increasing thier powers ,status, etc and trust me they die for it.
and i run a forum which has a monthly nl(contsts) whose winner i tag with a member of the month tag and giving huge reps

    thts all

Usually loyal members are honored to be made a mod. I have two on one of my forums and don't give them squat. They do a find job.

As far as contests go, look for ShoeMoney posts. He is a forum contest guru and has some great ideas. The contests I've run have really only been to grow the post count, but that's a double edged sword. You get a ton of posts, but most of the are of marginal value.

When my forum was brand new, I put out a post asking for mods. Even on a new forum, I got more responses than I needed mods in a short time. After that, I have hand-picked the rest of the mods. I asked people who I felt were a good match for the board and a good match for people. I also looked for people who weren't afraid to speak their mind, but did it in a nice way.

They do it gladly, but I still occasionally give them something for all they do. I have a cafepress gift shop and let them pick something from there. One mod I gave an amazon gift certificate to as she was going through some troubles and was able to get something she needed from there.
