    Hello,

I’m sorry for your troubles – negative reviews are such a rank & uncivilized way of bowling over online competitor’s.
If it makes you feel any better, though I doubt it will, Google puts very little weight on reviews when factoring local search & social sites into their rankings (as of early 2011).

One thing you neglected to mention is what local/social search page these negative reviews are being posted on. Are these reviews appearing on something like Yelp or yahoo local? Or is this on your Google Places account? There are effective methods for countering this type of stuff; however, they are unique to the portal your negative reviews are appearing on. In either case, I think that it can be dealt with much more effectively than by just flooding your site with positive reviews.

Regarding your unscrupulous business competitor – does he have a local site of his own with reviews on it? What about his website – is it doing well?

Last time something like this happened to me (or rather a client of mine), I retaliated by examining the offender’s website, and reporting him to Google 3 times for paid backlink’s, deceptive & spammy meta-description’s, and page title keyword stuffing.
Whether by fate or the hand of Google, his site was nerfed in the rankings.

I would suggest soliciting reviews to push the negative ones down the list. Also, if you can PROVE that the negative comments are coming from a competitor (e.g. posted from the same accounts, same i.p. address, etc), then you can contact the citation source and request that they be removed.

There are different practices in law but you'd expect people working within that industry to have a good and wide knowledge base. I think thats why people have been a little confussed as to why you'd ask on here.
There is a huge difference legally between someone speaking their mind and someone putting in writing their opinions. Writing on the internet is no exception to putting something in writing.

If it is a serious matter contact a legal team who specialise in this aspect of law and get their opinion. If it is not a very serious matter then financially you'd be better off just leaving it as you could spend a fortune sorting it out.
