As you asked about Link building. I read a blog post written by Aaron Wall and Andy Hagans about ways to link build, and things to avoid.

    http://www.seobook.com/archives/001792.shtml

Some good tips and things I hadn't thought about...

Submitting to search engines isn't really necessary if you can get a good back link in your niche, Google will spider it pretty quickly, and it often times will get indexed a LOT faster than manual user inclusion requests.

You should have a blog, good for keeping in contact with your user base or discussing things related to your niche.

"SEO" isn't made, it's something that is done. There is many tools out there to analyze how well a site is (or is not) optimized, and you can use the same tools to analyze your competition and see where they slack, and pick right up on that.

If you don't waste your time with the hundreds of thousands of paid directories out there (most of them won't go anywhere) at LEAST attempt to get your site into DMOZ. It's almost a necessity to get good rankings now.

Just my 25.5 cents. Sorry everything is out of order, you asked a few questions, so I answered them as I looked up resources and confirmed data. Hopefully you got what you needed :).

It's great that you've made a new site. I'll give a few tidbits of information to start on some of these topics and others can follow up:

    1. SEO
Sometimes the best thing you can do to SEO your site is provide a good title tag. Overdoing it and trying to fit keywords into sentences over and over that don't fit probably won't do you much good. Choose a title tag that best fits the content of your page, taking into consideration what you think people might search for to find your page. What is the overall topic should be your biggest consideration.

    2 and 3:
Submitting to search engines may have some affect. Who knows? The backlinks are definitely a good idea though. They'll be the things which help carry your site forward. Try emailing webmasters of sites that don't directly compete with yours but might be willing to link just because of all this valuable content you've created.

    4: Directories
This site has a long list of directories, most of which don't require a link back from you. They're considered 'SEO friendly'. I recommend you submit to some of them but only when your site is ready to be scrutinized by another person.
You won't get much traffic at all from most directories but the links must help in some way. Don't submit to DMOZ until your site is REALLY ready to be scrutinized. Make sure you set titles and descriptions of your site accurately or some directories may turn you down.

    5. Anchors in Signatures
Who knows? Maybe they help, maybe they don't. I think they are probably not all that useful considering that people frequently spam forums with nonsense in an attempt to gain rankings with the search engines. If you're going to put a signature on your posts in forums make sure that you aren't doing just that and they just might help!

    What else can be done?
Keep working on making content. Don't ever consider your site complete. Continue to wax, rinse and repeat. Eventually your site might grow large enough that it gets its own links from visitors who find your site useful and want to spread the info to others. Any time you make a new section that could be promoted, promote it! No harm can be done by seeking out links: People WILL link to you, yoiu just have to find them at first to help you get started.

I wish you the best of luck and as far as reference materials go, one of the best things you can do is browse the forums here and see what others have learned. This is a constantly evolving science. No one has it down but everyone has a theory.
