I have a MAJOR theory about Google.... I think they detect unnatural linking

I think they give you a penalty, if it looks like your links are unnatural aka SEO obtained

For instance excessive anchor text from dumb web directories.... blog comments.... articles .... etc.

    What do you guys think?

SEO isnt illegal, so why would they penalize anyone who use whitehat and quality SEO techniques?

Yes - i have been researching links in high ranking sites and very few have links that don't look natural - ie from directories or unrelated sites so i think this is the case

Mostly it depends on a proper Seo plan and the number of backlinks. I guess they are not going to change their algo in this section, hope they do :)

That's not even a new theory of yours. SEO experts know that already. Google has its way of detecting unnatural linking methods, that's why some sites are penalized or their ranking drops.

I'm not agreed with you. Excessive anchor text is not a problem, if and only if it is normal. Google has own algorithm to detect which link is normal and which is spammy. Search on google by writting "click here".
What do you seen? It is the effect of anchor text. Do you know how many links, adobe have for this anchor text? This amount is not excessive? But it is normal, so it is no problem? You may have gotten your answer.
    Ok Best of luck

That's no theory. Of course google detects unnatural links. If you have a 100% fresh Website that gets 1000's of backlinks from lots of linkfarms then google sees that as blackhat and might even kick you out of the index.

    Welcome to SEO!

Google definitely can detect spams, as well as good links. If a short articles contain too many links, Google will definitely pose some kind of penalty.

I think that instead of giving penalties, Google simply ignores certain links that look paid or unnatural. If they give too many penalties they risk penalising people who are being genuine and sincere in their link building efforts. I'm not saying you'll never get a penalty for these types of links though - I'm sure it can happen in certain cases, especially if you don't have a healthy link profile to start with.

I do think that excessive, optimised anchor text is unnatural and Google sees it as such and devalues those links. The exception here would be if you had an exact match domain name as in this instance you could get away with having the anchor text as the domain name. This is why it's really useful to optimise a page for multiple keywords and have around five variations of anchor text pointing to the page, rather than have the same anchor text for all links.
