I have a concept for a large scale website that I believe has potential to be hugely successful. However, this would be my first plunge into internet marketing and as such my experience is VERY limited, as is my budget. My concern with creating this website is that I do not have the resources to market it on the scale that it requires. If I am incapable of pushing my site into the public sphere within a short amount of time I am afraid that a competitor on a budget a thousand or ten thousand times greater than mine may decide to create a similar website, heavily advertise it and leverage their connections to become the de facto site in the "niche" that I'm carving. If that were to happen my site would become a wasted investment and my concept would benefit a competitor rather than myself. My question is, how do I go about launching and marketing this website to success on a shoestring budget while avoiding bigger fish from "stealing" my idea, creating a copycat website and flooding the market with marketing power that I cannot afford -essentially driving me out of business?
If it's greatest idea then you'll have no trouble finding investors. They will see the potential and give you the money to start up. However, if you have or have not the money then the following goes without saying. Have everything ready i.e. website content completed, all marketing material completed ready to launch at a moments notice. Also have your other developments ready for launch soon afterwards that way when a big company steals your idea you will be 1 step ahead. Remember big companies take longer to do things not matter how small or simple the project is. Your advantage is your size and that you can adapt quicker and with less risk.
I work at a company where people play video games for a living and we are preparing to face off against the giants in our area. What we are doing is making sure all of our stuff is ready to go when the beta hits (meta tag, title, meta description, h1 headers, a reasonable amount of links within our niche, etc). I think spending time hanging out here and learning has been huge for us (because we have all become aware of different issues).
