I have #1 rank in Google, MSN, and Yahoo. What next?

So working on my mom's site: www.ultimateduvetco.com (you may recognize the design if you've seen any other posts by me), I've gotten her #1 rankings for 'quality duvets', and top 10 for various other terms.

But she gets low yield from the site. What could I improve? Should I add e-commerce capabilities? I've been hesitant too because of the custom (and costly) nature of the products.

She gets business from the site, but nothing special. Any ideas?

overture keyord tool had no results for quality duvets - chances are that is not a highly searched for phrase. what you need to be ranking for is comforter or pillows. if not, use adwords.

Frank, I would suggest doing some research with the Digital Point Keyword Suggestion tool.

You see, it's quite possible to get #1 on the search engines for terms that no one is searching for. Illustration: I am #1 on Google, MSN, and Yahoo for my name. However, as the KW Suggestion tool shows, no one is searching for my name (actually, only two per day).

I took a look at the "duvet" keyword combinations. There are many Keyword phrases that draw tons of traffic. I would recommend that you do some optimizing of your website for some of those more competitive terms. As you begin to rise in the search engine results for those terms, your traffic will increase substantially, because lots of people are searching for those terms. For example, "duvet covers" is searched for over 1,000 times a day.

You may not do too well at this early stage targeting the top keywords like "duvet covers." Too much competition. But you might pick a few terms farther down the list and optimize for them.

    Good luck!

If you rank #1, across the board for "quality duvets" You should start looking at trying to rank #1 across the board for "duvets" or "duvet covers" or something that is very close.

Simply by continuing what you are doing (getting anchor text with quality duvets in it), you will naturally raise for "duvets" as well.

Quality traffic comes from quality keyphrases. JNM's suggestion to use AdWords is a great way to test a variety of keyphrases to see which ones draw the best potential customers. Then you can optimize your website for the keyphrases that work best for selling your mother's products.

So I should be concentrating on adding specific content around keyphrases such as 'down comforters' and related popular terms. Should this be purely informational in nature?

If the site was e-commerce enabled would that hurt rankings?

Some of the best keyword research i do is simply checking the refferal logs on my sites, see which other phrases bring people to the sites and focus on getting a #1 ranking for them as well.

Another method is to try to determin which keywords your competitors are trying to rank for, studying the anchor text that they use on links and this should give you a fair idea.

Duvet cover gets over 1000 searches per day by overtures measure and duvet gets about 400. Throw google in on just those two terms and you are well into the thousands of searches per day.

Other big terms relating to duvet cover:
    duvet cover(s)
    duvet
    silk duvet
    discount duvet cover
King, Queen, Twin duvet cover etc.

You have barely begun to break the surface of the duvet cover search market. I can pretty much guarantee that you can get 1000 or more times your current traffic if you can rank for the higher traffic terms.

This is exactly what you should do. Start targeting similar terms with "duvet" in them and it will help you rank for 'duvet' itself.

Also working on on site usability can also greatly improve website conversion. A lot of traffic is useless if it is sent to the wrong site. Not to say yours is, but generally speaking.

If the business doesn't sell duvet covers, should I be looking for an affiliate? And how do I build content around that? Just copy heavy with 'duvet covers' keywords?

but given that the purpose of the website is to have visitors purchasing products, would it not make sense to have an affiliate ad instead of adsense?

If you can find some very good, well targeted affiliate programs, then you can probably make more than adsense. Especially since the CPC for duvet covers isn't extremely high.

You also might look for companies that have a datafeed option so that you can add their products to your website.

I see a lot of home brew product sites from my embroidery business. You have an amazing looking site there. However, I only saw one pic of the product. My recommendation is more pictures of her products. Maybe a pic of each set she has created in the past. I only saw one generic pic of the product.

affiliate programs are the best way of making money from websities. The problem could be with choosing good affiliate program. Some sucks (for eg. some affiliate programs wont pay you penny or will shave you) and some are like diamonds. If you dont want to look for really good the best way is to use google adsense. It is fast and almost certain method of earning money.

Overture keyword tool also has no results for "analysis" - I don't trust that tool!
