Google is great for fidnign what u want, but when your a business marketing online through google, it can be great, but when they screw you, you really get screwed

To better describe the title of this thread, i dont hate Google, I hate that they are becoming the Giant for search engines, There needs to be an equal alternative, yes there is yahoo and msn, but how many of you actuallyuse yahoo or msn with legit hopes of fidning data that might be valuable to you?

    Bah...what do u guys think

Most likely the things that you hate about Google are why Google is the top search engine (it's the hardest to manipulate the search results... which means it's generally more relevant than others).

I use Yahoo and MSN quite frequently. I will have to say that I use Google by default, mainly because my browser search box is set to use Google. They all have their quirks, but I cannot say that I like one over the other for any compelling reason. Yahoo feels cluttered at times. MSN seems to hone in on proximity searches quite well. Google lets the crap float to the top a bit too long, so to find relevant results I am usually into the last of the top 10, or the 2nd/3rd pages of a search. Not all the time, but more often than not.

If there is something I am really having a hard time searching for I tend to use DogPile so I can just pull in results from just about everywhere at once.

Just apply the opposite to MSN. :D I run across some extremely irrelevant results at msn from time to time (the sort of results you'd never see at Google).

I hate Google's dominance too. It's getting too ridiculous with their online search monopoly. Once you get screwed in Google, your online business has no chance of survival. Fortunately, it hasn't yet happened to me, but to my acquintance from http://www.priceleap.com it is an actual case. He got screwed and shrinked enormously.

I find it kinda hard to call any company monopoly when there is other competition around doing the exact same thing. To be a "monopoloy" means you have to have "Exclusive Control" over the industry, product or service being offered. Again, that is not the case. Monopoly is a four letter word IMHO. No one ever seems to use it properly, or in the proper conext.

I think relying on Google as the Gold Standard in SEO or money making from SEO is not a good idea. I have sites that perform wonderfully because of rankings in Google, and Yahoo, and MSN. I have a few sites in particular that are only ranked in MSN/Yahoo and see more traffic, make more money, and do better than any one site I have that is ranked high in Google. Spread the love man, there is more than enough Search to go around. There is no Monopoly, and Google is not the only SE.

Some of my keywords kick arse in Yahoo and MSN, and average in Google... But do MSN and Yahoo bring more traffic than Google.. nope.

    Classic...

You are upset because it helps you find what you are looking for online but not find yourself online? That tells me that they have things perfectly organized for what it should used for. People finding what they are 'truly' looking for.

As for the marketing side, to get to the top it is a long, hard and narrow road. You obviously have not gone all the way or have become complacent. It is a never ending task to get to the top and stay at the top. Keep in mind, you better provide people what they are looking for or all your hard work will be for not...

Agreed NC - but I think it's safe to say that we all have had reason to moan about one search engine or another.

The main reason why most internet businesses survive is due to the person's dedication and persistance.

I hope Yahoo releases their contextual advertising program soon :) Give google a run for their money. More competition = better for us.

Oh yea, but what's the point? When you really step back and looks at the search engines and what they 'SHOULD' be used for... the majority of sites for many search terms are crappy spam sites.

I am content posting well for geo-targetted searches that I should be in the top 5 for... anything else is uncivilized :)

Umm... me. I use Yahoo and MSN more than Google by far and more and more by the day. The results for what I am searching for tend to be more relevant on the first page.

The only reason I use google from time to time is because my browser is set to default to the Firefox Google search engine because I want to support firefox as much as possible.

If your product is superior and you have implemented a better SEM strategy, there really is no competition. Someone may visit a spam page, but once they see it is spam, they click the back button and on to number two.

I use firefox, when I search for say 'toques' (leave it alone Yankees...) I will open up the majority of the first page results in tabs and one by one eliminate the 'spammy' non-relevant sites.

It has become such a habit, I don't even acknowledge spam sites anymore and none of them have ever 'tricked' me into ordering...
