Hi, to all. I got a new project from a newspaper company. I want to create a website for them. It should be a newspaper website, mainly should like http://www.yahoo.com, can i get any scripts for that.

I see some newspaper companies are having blog as their website. Is this a good idea to have a blog other than a website. Help me with this.

Well as a suggestion you should look for professional Wordpress themes[paid of course] that have a magazine look or resemble that of a news paper style for news pieces, articles, top stories etc.

I am sure there must be some available.

Just search google for "newspaper cms"
There are a lot of offers there, you should just choose the ones, that suits your needs the best.

It's kinda hard to give an advice cause you don't specify what you actually need

go for wordpress if you or your customers are planning to update the website on daily basis or go for joomla if you are looking to build a more static (not static at all) website.

you will definetly have to use a cms because without they won't be able to update the website on their own without editing the html files.

if you are in need of a designer I might be able to help you :p

They opensourcecms.com to find one which suites what your client wants. WP is too primitive. I don't know how big / small the paper is, but even medium papers in NL (16 million inhabitants) have CMS systems well over $100k ; they would never go for the primitive open source ones.

LOL... guess that's why many large corporations and government agencies (such as Walt Disney, NASA, and even Yahoo) are finding open source to be the wiser choice.

Before you go building any website... you should first do some homework to understand what the needs will be. What type of software are the reporters/editors using now ? How will they get their stories published on the web ? What does this newspaper expect to accomplish with a website ?

Then you can do more research to find which CMS or software will be best suited for this job.

I am a huge opensource fan; actually I run only Linux and Freebsd on all my computers and have 0 (as in *zero*) proprietary packages installed.

But I have a lot of experience with CMSs and especially in the publishing world and yes, the open source ones are primitive as hell. They lack the features (both tech and business wise) of the high end closed source ones. And sure WD, NASA and 'even'(?) Yahoo love opensource, but not the CMS's; they all use custom or expensive CMS systems. They use opensource for a lot of other stuff and rightfully so; CMSs are just not there yet and might never be there as the open source implementers miss the incentive to implement a lot of that boring and costly stuff.

thanks Kwaku for making that statement clearer.

The OP needs to do some research and planning first before deciding whether a CMS or proprietary software will be the best option to handle this project... and stay within their budget. They may not want or need all that "boring and costly stuff" ;) *yet* Which is why I am guessing is one reason the OP got this project to begin with.

I have seen these $100K systems fail with newspapers... and local government. Perhaps just bad decisions on their part... either way... more planning and research are needed into their needs and desires for this project before a proper decision like this can be made.

Dude. What did the company ask you to make? What is the project specification? If you don't tell what exactly they asked, it is impossible to advise a CMS. WP is not really a CMS and I would be kind of embarrassed to deliver that, but that might be just me. Just tell what the project is in more detail if you want to hear something meaningful.

My idea would be working closely with a web development firm (Outsource to them I mean)

Otherwise it would be doubly difficult to deliver the quality and professionalism when you are not familiar yourself..

Joomla can do all that yes; it has plugins for all these things, but you need a good Joomla coder to put it all together.
