Hi guys, i got a letter the other day from a company asking me to transfer the domain registration to them as its up for renewal soon. I didnt realise it was a transfer until i read the letter a few times however

they wanted to try and charge me £20 PER YEAR!!! for a .com when i currently pay £2.50 give or take.

has anyone come across this? If i didnt read it carefully id of thought it was just a renewal and done it anyway

I get several of those each year from different scammers.

All of whom are going to charge a lot more than I currently pay. See, it pays to read in carefully.

this is 100% scam because you can't transfer your domain when there is less than 60 days left to it's expiration date

You are 100% correct that this is a scam.

This portion of your statement is grossly incorrect:

You can transfer them at anytime provided you have owned them for at least 60 days. Just this past week I transferred one that was set to expire in 7 days. Now that is a little closer than I would suggest pushing it but it can be done.

Then may be it's related with registrars, in which registrar was your domain, and to which register did you transfer it? because some how I had something in my mind that it's not allowed to transfer domains when there is specific time left for their expiration date

The most recent transaction was from domainsite*com to godaddy*com.

Some of the off the wall people like 1&1 may impose silly restictions and that may be your experience. I would imagine that a "free" reg you got somewhere might entail additional restrictions.

They are trying to make people transfer their names to them by preying on the people that don't know much about domains & where they have them registered. I use to get a few letters sent by these companies but not many. Guess that International postage must be a bit costly for them ;)

Has to be very carefull while transfer the domain.. but not all spammers.. some registrar or resellers are doing it.. collecting mail id from whois and sending to the domain owner
