I am using windows XP professional. I want to make sure that certain websites should not open up on my PC. Is there any way to achieve this?

    Thanks

In "127.0.0.1 domain.com", substitute the name of the site you want to block for "domain.com" and it should work. Some viruses use that technique to try to prevent you from getting to online antivirus scanners.

Note that the file is called C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts -- no extension (you may also find a file called hosts.sam but that's a dummy file... the .sam part stands for "sample").

If for some reason that does NOT work for you (although I don't know why it wouldn't), try blocking the site in your firewall software.

Ok, I got that right. I wanted to block "www.domain.com" and I used

    127.0.0.1 domain.com

    But, now, I used

    127.0.0.1 www.domain.com

    and it worked!

Is it possible to also block a specific IP in this manner?

I pesume so, however in mine, where I see I.P's, they always proceed with a .net/com/cc/etc, hence
I guess .cc is a dummy?

Try an I.P with a .com, I think it'll ignore the .com
