I have been building links to my website and by usin the seo toolbar in firfox the stats are as shown:

    Google Index : 10
    Google Backlinks : 0

    Yahoo Index : 8
    Yahoo Backlinks : 336

    MSN Index : 1
    MSN Backlinks : 0

I dont recieve traffic from MSN or Yahoo and i'm not even ranked for my chosen keyword in any of the search engines. How come google isnt listing my backlinks?

    Cheers

Every SE has its own way of considering and valuing backlinks. Google for instance considers backlinks that are not reciprocal. Addicionaly google will never count as a backlink, an article written on a forum or a blog.

For these reasons, you will have always fewer links with google.

You also have to remember that to index the whole internet, spiders from SE take weeks! Spiders are programs which accuracy is questionnable, that's why SE ask to publish a file with all links from your site so it can get properly indexed. Read http://www.google.com/webmasters to get some information on Google.

Getting the referral traffic is based on the back links to your website. However, to appear in SERPs is mix or good contents and good back links.

Having the relevant and rich contents from user perspective makes your site search able.

While getting back links think of getting them through some unconventional ways like getting links by giving away some free online tools, articles, blogging, helping your peers by passing vital information which would help them and in return you will get more natural looking back links. Google likes the links acquired naturally so think beyond submitting your sites to just directories.

    Good luck.

One of your statements is incorrect, google does count forum posts as backlinks. My first backlink in google was from a forum post.

As i can observe, it doesn't count links on every forums. I have no google backlinks from this forum and i have an idea why (maybe i'm totally wrong): forum content is reachable by querystring URL (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=497370), they are build dynamically and generated with the use of a server script that recovers the content from a Database. I have observed that in my site, querystring URL are only followed by spiders when the link is in the sitmap file. I doubt forum site have an updated sitemap for all their content.

I'll agree that not all forums are counted, but just as much as not all websites are counted as well.(for what reasons, slow indexing maybe who knows) It was the just the statement "google will never", didn't want to get people confused on that. Google does count forum posts as backlinks, just not all of them.
