Google rarely shows many backlinks even if you have them.

    Try a search for "link:yoursite.com" on Yahoo.com.

    You may be pleasantly surprised.

Use yahoo site explorer: http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/ to find your backlinks. You can also see them in google webmaster tools. Article links showup rather fast, directory links take time and SB links would mostly appear in an hour.

Before you proceed further in link building, stop and ask yourself - At the end of this all, what do I want?

    a) A million backlinks
    b) A million visitors

I bet its the second option right? If that is the case, stop building backlinks this way. It just does not work. Instead concentrate on providing value to your users with content. You will earn natural backlinks if other websites find your content useful. Besides, if you are going to give nice content, people are going to bookmark you as well..Google gives value to al of this. I assure you, you will soon see visitors flocking to your site like hell..

It takes time, but pays! :)

Thats good advice but there comes a point where you have the perfect or (near enough) set of articles which are getting natural links, however you can promote it yourself with submissions and links obtained through you.

building superb content is important but also a competitive advantage can be achieved through you looking for good sites to exchange links or add your site too.

Its up to you but many people seem to get the content/link builiding balance too one sided.

You are pretty much right Simstar., and I agree with you. My point is basically that as a webmaster you should not worry about backlinks. They are not the priority., genuine content is.

Forum posting, blog commenting is all important in order to get the word out. And if your content is good, the other forum and blog visitors are indeed going to link to you (that way you get inbound links unabated).

The problem is when people lose track of priority and go to any extent as in directory submission, paid linking etc. in order to get inbound links..

    Hi Harry9

Backlinks are basically links to your website from other websites/blogs. Search engines tend to see backlinks as a means to understand how valuable your website is among the entire gamut of sites in your domain.

For example, your site is linked by only a couple of blogs that were created yesteday, it does not mean much. But if a website that has been there for 5 years and has a thousand pages links to your site, it means you are actually an authority on the subject and that is why that big site is linking to you. So, the value of the backlink is higher.

This is the most basic premise. There are many more to it which you shall understand by reading through the different threads on DP :)

I would recommend you to outsource your link building activity to a professional submission service.

No, its not necessary.....rather work hard yourself and concentrate on adding good content for your site and get involved in forum/blog posting [ dont spam ]
You need to keep patience for getting results from Google ;)

If your blog is new and is not even indexed once by Google, then submit your blog to Digg.com once (that is enough).

Once your blog is submitted to Google, you do not have to worry about submission to any other service at all. Any other submission does not add value worth the effot :)
