I do not understand how this site became very popular

Maybe someone can tell me how ipchicken.com become as popular as it is. Off course its not super popular (alexa 34,000+) but quite popular for a site that checks IP addresss.

Does the word chicken has something to do with it or what (viral, etc).. or just overall good marketing?

 

It's possible that it succeeds because it does one thing and it does it well. Like business: a specialist will often earn more than a jack-of-all-trades becuase he does one thing and he does it well.

Words like "Google or yahoo" u have ever seen in any dictionary? does it relate with term "Search" ? NO.
Its all about branding and promoting.

 

is the word CHICKEN a tech term of some kind? does not have anything to do with the word "checking" maybe..

 

I dont think 'chicken' is a tech term, I just think it is well branded as others have said.

Did a quick Google search and people talk about it because it has a fun querky kind of name. Also very easy to remember

Maybe it attract old visitors again and again rather than those ip checking site who attract visitor by seo only.
I have known an ip checking site like that in my country.
That is the reason it is popular.
