since everybody knows about amazon whenever they need to buy something they can directly go to amazon rather than the affiliate site. So its not good i think. Exeptional trade would not make a good money

If you think that way, you will never make any money in affiliate programs.

you could say the same about virtually any sales page that has a "join our affiliate program" link on it! If the visitor is marketing savvy they could very easily rob you of your commissions simply by joining the affiliate program themselves.

I think that most people (in general) are honest enough to allow you to get your commission, because you brought the product to their attention. I least I like to think that that is the case...

Make it clear that an affiliate (of Amazon or any other), display the product(s) you recommend for impulse buy, or link them straight to the product order page.

I have completely relevant Amazon ads relating exactly to my site and some of the products are the cheapest anywhere, really good deals. I've had alot of clicks but no revenue at all. Do I just not have enough traffic? I have alot more work to do on my site so does it take hundreds of uniques to make Amazon money?

I have to agree, it seems that if you have the kind of volume traffic you need to produce any money from Amazon you would do better with dozens of other types of ads.

They do pay low. But there are people who make mega bucks w/amazon.

You can't sell things to people who aren't looking to buy, even if you think the products are relevant to your site. If it's not converting, you don't have "looking to buy" visitors.

Amazon works best for product review/comparison sites, and sites that are strictly shops. I have several amazon sites that convert 1 in 4.

That's the whole purpose of affiliates - bringing in customers. You can say that about most affiliate programs. Why be an ebay affiliate if people can just go to ebay? Why be a Capital One affiliate if people can just go to Capital One? Won't get far in AM with that point of view..

I dont promote amazon as much as I should, but they have a lot going for them.

    Everybodys heard of them.
    They sell almost everything.
Some people think they sell only sell books and media. (affiliates can show that they sell much more)
    The tracking works.
They dont cheat you like some merchants.
They are an in-house merchant. (no network bs)

The one thing which really puts me off Amazon is the 24 hour cookie.

IMO that is pretty poor esp when you compare it to some of the other programs.

I've heard about sites making good money at Amazon. Smth specific with the offer of the books related to site content.

Amazon really makes it easy for affiliates, too. They don't always make the cheapest price easy to find. They would prefer that you buy directly from them, or so it seems. If your site can display the often lower prices of Amazon's 3rd party merchants for the SAME products, you appear to have lower prices than Amazon. :D
